At the Port of Olympia, our mission is to create economic opportunities and build community for all of Thurston County through responsible resource use. That encompasses nurturing the passions of our youth and fostering opportunities that shape their dreams into reality. Recently, we had the privilege of welcoming a remarkable young individual, Arik, a 12-year-old from Olympia whose love for aviation is truly inspiring. With a dedicated enthusiasm for flying, Arik often spends his mornings before school conducting flight training simulations and then during recess hours he’s captivated by the skies, identifying flight patterns and sharing insights about various aircraft with his classmates.

Thanks to Port staff Chris Paolini, Airport Senior Manager and Taber Lee, Communications and Marketing Senior Manager, Arik and his family were able to enjoy a memorable tour of the Olympia Regional Airport, an experience that fulfilled a lifelong dream. This opportunity would not only deepen Arik’s appreciation for aviation but also ignite his ambition to pursue a career in the industry.

The Olympia Regional Airport is more than just a runway for general aviation planes; it is a vital community asset that plays a pivotal role. Just as our communities invest in soccer and baseball fields, gyms for basketball and volleyball, and theatres for the performing arts, our regional airport offers our youth a unique space to explore their interests in aviation.

With three local flight schools operating at the airport- Safety in Motion Flight Center, Glacier Aviation, and Spanaflight Aviation, children like Arik have access to training and educational opportunities that encourage their passions. Passions that might just lead them to an aviation career. The airport also serves as a pivotal hub for the Department of Natural Resources during fire season, ensuring the safety of our community through rapid response efforts. Additionally, it is home to Airlift Northwest, which provides critical medical services for accident responses and organ transfers. Washington State Patrol, Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Washington State Department of Transportation all conduct operations from the airport, further demonstrating its significance to our region.

Arik’s excitement during the airport tour was contagious as he learned about the different aspects of aviation, from flight operations to emergency services and airport management. He left with not only cherished memories but also a clearer vision for his future in aviation. Seeing young people like Arik engaged and inspired reminds us of the role the Olympia Regional Airport plays in encouraging the next generation of aviation enthusiasts.

As we reflect on Arik’s journey, we are proud of the opportunities provided by the Olympia Regional Airport. It is our hope that, in the years to come, many more children will find their passions ignited and their dreams taking flight, thanks to the accessibility and services offered at our airport. The Port of Olympia remains committed to supporting our community and fostering environments where dreams can soar, just like Arik’s.

Keep dreaming big, Arik – the sky’s the limit!
