Alex Smith

Executive Director

Alex Smith brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her role as the executive director of the Port of Olympia. With over four years as Deputy Supervisor at the Department of Natural Resources, overseeing forest resilience, regulation, and aquatic resources, Alex has showcased strong leadership and oversight across diverse programs. Her tenure at DNR was marked by tackling critical issues such as aquatic lands management, port operations, salmon recovery, and habitat restoration, underscoring her unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

Prior to her time at DNR, Alex’s career journey spanned both the private and public sectors. From practicing environmental law in the private sector to holding positions at esteemed organizations like the state Attorney General’s Office, Port of Seattle, and later DNR, she garnered invaluable experience in navigating complex regulatory landscapes.

Alex’s tenure as a Program Manager at the Department of Ecology further honed her skills in regulatory compliance and environmental policy. Her background as an Assistant Attorney General representing both DNR and Ecology on diverse matters, including aquatic lands cleanups, adds depth to her understanding of legal intricacies surrounding environmental conservation.

With an undergraduate degree from Brown University, a law degree from the University of Washington, and a career dedicated to working with ports, Alex is well-equipped to navigate the complexities of port management and community engagement. She is enthusiastic about leveraging her expertise to drive positive outcomes for the Port of Olympia and the broader Thurston County community.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Alex finds joy in staying active through cycling and rowing on Budd Inlet. Her love for adventure extends to her four dogs, who often lead her on unexpected adventures.

Alex’s passion for environmental advocacy, coupled with her proven track record of leadership, makes her a valuable asset to the Port of Olympia team. Her dedication to fostering sustainability and community engagement will undoubtedly contribute to the port’s continued success.
