OLYMPIA – The Port of Olympia is pleased to announce the successful completion of phase one for our Budd Inlet research vessel operations and sediment testing. Samples collected from over 100 targeted sites have been sent to the lab for analysis as part of our ongoing Budd Inlet environmental cleanup and restoration initiative. We are delighted to share that we are ahead of schedule in this critical project.
The research vessel, launched on January 8, 2024, has diligently gathered sediment samples under the supervision of our contracted consultant Dalton, Olmsted and Fuglevand (DOF). This meticulous process over the last seven weeks is in line with our commitment to investigating and addressing legacy pollutants, such as dioxins and furans, in the sediment throughout specific and targeted areas of Budd Inlet.
Dependent on funding, we intend to continue our investigative work in Sub-Area 2: the West Bay of Budd Inlet, by late summer of 2024. The Port of Olympia remains dedicated to rectifying environmental lapses of the past and fostering a healthier ecosystem for the future.
Jonathon Wolf, Port of Olympia Budd Inlet Project Manager emphasized, “The completion of sediment testing at our Sub-Area 1 location in and around the East Bay area, signifies our commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being. We are determined to address legacy pollutants in Budd Inlet and create a cleaner, safer environment for future generations.”
Shawn Gilbertson, Port of Olympia Director of Environment Programs and Planning, added, “Our restoration plan for the shoreline aims to not only repair environmental damage but also enhance recreational spaces and community connections along the waterfront.”
The Port encourages community members to stay engaged and informed throughout this initiative. Public input and collaboration are essential to the success of our environmental initiatives, and we are committed to transparent communication.
